Pet Parasite Prevention | Why Preventive Measures Matter

Pet parasite prevention may not seem like a big deal at first glance. If there’s not already a problem, why do anything? Parasites like fleas and ticks are more than an annoyance. They can be potentially dangerous to your pet (and you!). Effective preventive measures help your pet live a more comfortable, fulfilling life, and keep them safe from parasitic infections and subsequent illnesses.

What Pests Are Pestering Your Pets?

The most common parasites are fleas and ticks, both of which feed off your pet’s skin. While fleas will linger, lay eggs, and make a home in your pet’s fur, ticks are a one-and-done kind of deal. Still, that doesn’t make them any less dangerous—ticks carry a range of tick-borne illnesses that can infect your pet with a single bite. The most common is Lyme disease, to which we are also susceptible. Keeping ticks and fleas off your pet, keeps them away from you and your human family, too!

So, What Can You Do?

Luckily, there are a number of preventive options available for your pet’s protection against parasites. We carry a range of options for your cat and dog.

For dogs

  • VectraD, a topical that seeps into the bloodstream through the skin
  • Bravecto, an oral chew that works similarly through ingestion

For Cats

  • Vectra, a topical that protects your cat against fleas
  • Bravecto, the topical version (as cats don’t do well with orals) that protects against both fleas and ticks.

Bravecto is typically good for 3 months of protection, while Vectra is effective for 1 month.
