Bird & Exotic Pet Exams

Not all pets loved by humans are furry, four-legged animals. Birds and exotic pets can make great companions, too, and there are many factors to consider when caring for them. Whether they walk, hop, fly, crawl, or slither, it’s important for all pets to receive annual physical examinations and preventive checkups. Early detection increases the chances of preventing or delaying the onset and progression of disease in your companion.

Lakeside Veterinary Center is proud to be one of the few animal hospitals in the area that offers full-service veterinary care for avian and exotic pets. These animals have very specific requirements when it comes to their nutrition, housing, and behavior. Therefore, the annual exam visit is the perfect time to review your companion’s specific needs with our veterinarians who are specially trained in the care of birds and exotics.

What a Wellness Exam Includes

As one of the few veterinary clinics that offers bird and exotic exams for pets in Laurel and surrounding areas, we can provide a complete checkup while offering valuable information specific to your pet. Issues such as changes in feather/skin, body weight, stool, urine, respiratory functions, and eye clarity can easily be detected and treated. At a wellness exam, our veterinarians and trained staff can also teach you about:

  • Proper diet
  • Cage setup
  • Bedding
  • Nutritional supplementation
  • Environmental requirements, such as temperature, heat, and light
  • Aging changes
  • Species-specific behaviors
  • Enrichment and foraging

We believe in educating our clients in order for them to properly take care of their bird or exotic pet, especially since the needs of these animals are so different from those of other species. In addition, we can discuss other services, including nail trimming and wing trims, if necessary.

Senior Pet Care

If your bird or exotic pet is over 5 years of age, they have officially entered their senior years. Like us, our pets become more susceptible to illness and injury as they get older, and need more frequent care from their veterinarian to stay healthy. At Lakeside Veterinary Center, we recommend bringing in your senior avian and exotic pets annually for blood and fecal tests. These animals can conceal their illnesses effectively, so be sure to stay on top of their preventive care routine, and notify us right away if you detect a problem. Senior pets can develop conditions such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and arthritis. We encourage you to ask your veterinarian any questions you might have about caring for your pet in their advanced years, and how to accommodate changes in activity and mobility. If your pet is experiencing aches and pains due to inflamed joints, we can offer medication, supplements, or even laser therapy to increase their comfort. Our goal is to keep your pet in the best possible health so they can age gracefully and comfortably.

Vaccinations for Ferrets

Along with wellness exams, vaccines are an important part of an overall wellness plan for ferrets. To see which vaccines are recommended for YOUR specific pet, please call and schedule an appointment with Lakeside Veterinary Center. Our bird and exotic pet exams, vaccinations, and other services in Laurel are intended to keep your pet healthy through every life stage, so schedule an appointment today.
